What sort of accommodations do you prefer when traveling?

How to Choose the Best Place to Stay on Vacation - Seven Corners Over a billion people travel each year, and no two of them travel in the same manner. Every excursion, from solitary travels in Patagonia to family vacations along the California coast, is unique.

Every sort of traveler requires a unique style of housing. With so many possibilities, it might be tough to decide what works best for you on vacation.

Vacation Accommodation Options

Hotel

Staying in a hotel, like all of the other accommodations on this list, has advantages and disadvantages. Hotels have a distinct advantage in terms of location. They are typically located near the activity, making it easy to walk or drive to your destination.

On the plus side, when you book a hotel, you usually know precisely what you're getting: a set check-in and check-out time, your own room with a private toilet, and little shampoos. Knowing what you're getting into relieves tension, especially if you're traveling with small children.

However, there may be greater diversity between hotel tiers. One- and two-star lodgings are relatively modest; don't expect much more than a bed and washroom. Three- and four-star hotels are moving into more opulent terrain, where you can anticipate a continental breakfast, pool, fitness room, and other facilities to make your stay more enjoyable.

Even with this variance, there is an expectation of service at each level. As long as you read reviews and ratings, you should be able to prevent many shocks.

The negative of hotels is that their convenience and location can come at a cost. In the United States, the typical hotel room costs around $170 per night. Expect greater charges in famous tourist cities such as Miami and New York. Hotels may not be the ideal option for budget-conscious travelers.

Motel

A motel can be... polarizing. You either think they're musty and unclean, with continually leaking bathroom faucets, or you like them for their campy charm. And, to be honest, both descriptors may be correct.

The Palms Motor Hotel.

Motels became popular with vehicle travel in the United States in the 1950s, hence the term being a mix of "motor" and "hotel." That's why you'll find them along highways and why, if you need a fast stop for the night during a road trip, you may give a motel a try.

Motels are often less expensive than hotels, making them ideal for smaller families on a budget. Just remember that you'll probably receive what you pay for, which isn't much. They may give a basic breakfast, but there are no gyms or other facilities available.

Many road trippers are drawn to hotels because of their quirky nature. Many websites advertise their accommodations as "vintage" or "classic," and staying in one will seem like you've traveled back in time a decade or six. Just make sure you seek current reviews and photographs. What one person considers antique, another views as ancient and out of date.

Motels are only located in the United States, so if you want to stay cheap on your European holiday, you'll need to go elsewhere.

Timeshares

Timeshares are a type of vacation ownership scheme in which you pay for a piece of a condo or resort stay. Others contribute a percentage, and you all get the opportunity to use the condo on a rotating basis. Depending on the kind of timeshare, you may stay at the property for the same week each year or for a certain period of time at any time during the year (as long as it is accessible). In other cases, your portion may only be due once every other year.

There is also considerable variety in whether you may just stay at your home or select from any of the resort's properties. Many visitors locate the ideal spot to stay in Disney World through the Disney Vacation Club timeshare program.

Timeshares aren't for everyone, but they may be quite beneficial for visitors who enjoy regularity or want to visit the same area year after year. When you invest properly, owning a timeshare can save you money, but keep in mind that there is an upfront investment as well as annual maintenance and HOA fees. It will take some time for your investment to pay off, so make a long-term or even lifetime commitment.

Like Disney, additional hotel and resort brands are joining the timeshare market. This is a popular option for those who enjoy timeshares but want greater freedom to visit other locations. Rather than being limited to a specific property or unit, you can select from any of the resort's options.

In addition to the Disney Vacation Club, you may check at Marriott Vacation Clubs, Hilton Grand Vacations, or Club Wyndham for more recognized options.

Vacation rentals

House sharing can be a riskier proposition than staying at a major hotel, but with so many possibilities and rising popularity, the chances of finding something that appeals to you are very excellent.

Some Airbnb or Vrbo hosts take pleasure in providing a unique or eccentric experience. One-of-a-kind design, personalized amenities, and local suggestions add an extra layer of service that you may not experience at more mainstream accommodations.

Kelsey Tharp Nighthawk, a Seven Corners writer, had an Airbnb host in Nashville who recommended wonderful restaurants. If you're in the vicinity, try Five Daughters Bakery. You're welcome.) At another apartment in Michigan, her host made blueberry scones every morning. Years later, she is still dreaming about their blueberry sweetness.

Vacation rentals offer the extra advantage of being almost anywhere you wish to be. If you want a downtown, central location, you'll find it. If you want to be on the edges of the activity, where things are quieter, you will find that as well.

Vacation rentals are especially appealing if you're traveling in a group. A hotel would struggle to accommodate a family gathering or ladies' retreat. Renting a complete property, on the other hand, will provide enough space for everyone.

Unfortunately, not all rentals are great. While it may still be affordable, particularly for groups, the great prices of the early 2010s are becoming increasingly scarce. Keep an eye out for any hidden expenses. Taxes, cleaning fees, and other expenses can rapidly turn an otherwise attractive offer sour.

House sharing may be unexpected. Try some of these strategies to ensure your vacation rental is what you expect:

  • Before making any commitments, read the host reviews. Keep an eye out for complaints regarding noisy neighbors, untidy or unsanitary locations, and parking.

  • Airbnb prohibits hosts from using inside cameras at their properties beginning in early 2024. Cameras were formerly allowed in halls and living rooms. Outdoor security cameras are still permitted, as long as they tell you. If this and other security precautions are essential to you, check for them on the booking website or contact the host personally.

  • Determine if the host resides on-site. Some tourists may not mind or perhaps appreciate sharing a place with their host. Their host will be present whether you want assistance or simply want a dining recommendation. Other tourists may feel that having an on-site host is too similar to having someone continually watching over their shoulder.

  • Match your vacation style to the amenities. It will be difficult to find a property with a gym. If you need to work up a sweat on the road, consider staying at a hotel. If you enjoy peaceful nights in with takeout, search for a place with a kitchenette and basic cooking/dining necessities (plates, glasses, cutlery). Travelers searching for a place to sleep, on the other hand, can generally get away with a simpler setup and worry less about appliances and whether or not there's olive oil in the pantry.

Hostel

Hostels are the ideal money-saving solution. Depending on the area, you might be able to get a hotel for $20 per night. That is why college students and young grads utilize them the most.

There are reasons why hostels are so affordable. Although some have double rooms, which are ideal for traveling with a companion, you will most likely have to share a room with strangers in a bunk bed configuration. Those other people may have different schedules than you, returning at 3 a.m., maybe after a night out partying.

You won't be sharing just one bedroom. Community restrooms and showers are the norm. We've been at hotels that were spotlessly clean, but they were constantly damp. If you don't want to walk on slick flooring, bring some flip-flops.

On the plus side, hostels can be found in almost every major city in the globe, and they're a terrific way to meet other people, particularly solitary and adventurous travelers. If sharing a bunk isn't enough quality time for you, hostels will include kitchens (extra bonus: no need to dine out every day) and common spaces.

Some will also organize mixers and other social events. Becky Hart stayed at a modest hostel in Canterbury, England, one summer, when the host planned a simple supper and pub crawl nearby. She invited everyone individually, treating you like a guest in her house rather than a consumer.

Before renting a hostel accommodation, read reviews from past guests on credible sites such as Hostelworld. Here are some of our top features to look for when choosing a hostel:

  • Some hostels have age limitations, both minimum and maximum. Before you show up on the doorstep, make sure you're inside the required range.

  • Because you share sleeping quarters, security for your stuff is an issue. Find out whether the hostel has lockers. And if they do, inquire whether they give a lock or whether you must provide your own.

  • Some hostels provide coed rooms. Others divide you by gender. Some solitary female travelers prefer an all-female dorm, however those traveling in a mixed group may need to locate a co-ed choice.

  • Consider membership. Some chain hostels provide discounts or loyalty programs. If you're on a backpacking trip (AKA traveling on a shoestring budget) and will be sleeping in numerous hostels along the road, this might be a worthwhile purchase.

  • Find out whether they have a curfew or a check-in time limit. Travelers who want to increase their chances of having quiet roommates will hope the answer is yes. In any case, a curfew might significantly disrupt your journey if you arrive late at night. Don't allow a flight delay or other travel issue prevent you from checking in after hours.

Camping & glamping

Camping is priced similarly to hostels. Accommodation is at its most basic. After all, you only get a bit of ground to pitch your tent on. Half of you reading this right now are saying, "Absolutely not. I'm not sleeping on the ground, and I need indoor plumbing." Seven Corners Digital Designer Maddie, whose husband took her camping for the first time for her birthday, is right there with you. "You could hear all these animals, and you didn't know if it was a bear, deer, bird, or raccoon," she said.

The other half of you can't think of anything finer than spending the night out in nature, roughing it, and enjoying a completely natural experience. Camping is an excellent way to explore national parks. You'll be right in the thick of it all for a fraction of the cost of staying at one of the lodges.

The issue with camping is that what one traveler enjoys may be something that another traveler dislikes—cooking your own meals over a fire, being self-sufficient for all of your requirements, sleeping in a sleeping bag. Whether camping is the best option while looking for the ideal spot to stay is mostly dependent on your individual preferences.

If you enjoy some aspects of camping but don't want to rough it in a tent, try glamping. Also known as elegant camping, you'll hire a cabin or sumptuous tent complete with a bed and access to an indoor bathroom. Meals (prepared by someone else) are most likely included or offered.

To make things even easier, Hilton and AutoCamp formed a relationship that allows glampers to book directly through Hilton's booking sites. Hilton Honors members can now earn and redeem points for stays at AutoCamp, which offers custom Airstreams and glamping tents near US national parks.

Glamping costs more than regular camping, but if it means you'll have a better time on your vacation, the extra cost may be worthwhile.

Unusual accommodations

Sometimes the sort of holiday accommodation is less significant than the location's personality. If this is the case, you require an uncommon accommodation. Who's up for a treehouse, geodesic dome, converted train car, or cave?

  • Geodesic domes, often known as bubble hotels, are particularly attractive in far northern regions. If you want to watch the Northern Lights or stargaze from bed, a bubble hotel is the best option. For an even more extreme—but still luxurious—option, consider an ice hotel in Montreal, Canada, or Swedish Lapland.

  • Get in over your head at The Manta Resort in Tanzania. You may practically sleep beneath the Indian Ocean in its underwater home. Catch some rays up top, then get some ZZZs among the fish.

  • If you're in the United States, visit these luxurious caverns in Big Bend, Texas. Wannabe cave dwellers can find plenty of possibilities in Türkiye. We may thank the region's geology and a network of historic dwellings for this.

  • Ecolodges across the world frequently have distinct personalities. You can be staying amid the trees or in a cottage that makes you feel as if you've removed all boundaries between man and Mother Nature.

  • Book a room at a historic chateau or castle. Many people around Europe have turned to hotels or Airbnb rentals.

  • This train caboose in Hocking Hills, Ohio, seems out of place in the middle of the woods. Inside, however, is a cutting-edge structure that sleeps five while providing an unexpected level of luxury and design.
